Choosing the Right Level

A higher level is not automatically a better one. The right level for any given process is determined by the stakes of the decision, the maturity of your data and models, and the quality of your oversight.

Autonomy Must Match the Stakes

The amount of autonomy you give an AI system should be proportionate to the consequences of it being wrong. A Level 2 agent with excellent human oversight is often more valuable — and far safer — than a Level 4 set-up with weak governance.

  • ◆Stakes: What happens if this goes wrong? Higher stakes demand lower autonomy or stronger oversight.
  • ◆Data readiness: Can the AI actually be trusted with the data it would rely on?
  • ◆Oversight capacity: Do you have the people and processes to catch errors before they cause harm?
  • ◆Reversibility: Can a bad decision be caught and undone in time?

Don't ask "how do we get to Level 4?" Ask "what is the right level for this specific process, given the stakes?" Different parts of your business will sit at different levels — and that is exactly as it should be. The Strategy course goes deeper into calibrating autonomy.
