Watch: How Algorithms Shape Our World

8 minCourse 03

Kevin Slavin's talk from TED Global is one of the most striking accounts of what happens when we build systems we don't fully understand and give them control over environments we rely on. He talks about algorithmic trading, spatial design shaped by machine latency, and a world increasingly written in code that its creators no longer fully comprehend.

The Governance Link

Slavin's core concern is the gap between the speed at which algorithms operate and the speed at which humans can observe, understand, and correct them. The Eight Gates model exists to ensure that before any algorithm reaches that autonomous operating speed, humans have thoroughly interrogated what it does, what happens when it fails, and who is watching.
